Pathshala — Free English-Medium School (Nursery–V)

Started by Dev Kumar, a young Coal India Limited (BCCL) employee who never studied in an English-medium school himself, Pathshala offers free, English-medium education to underprivileged children in Katras, Dhanbad and nearby mining-affected areas (Nursery to Class V).

The schools operate in localities with thousands of mines-affected families, where basic awareness, foundational learning and skill development are urgent needs.

How We Teach (Modern Pedagogy)

Pathshala believes in learning by real-world examples. Counting becomes fun when children count steps on a staircase; role models are introduced by bringing their replicas into the classroom context—turning abstract ideas into tangible experiences.

Facilities & Student Support

  • Separate toilets for girls and boys
  • Playground and safe drinking water connection
  • Free essentials: uniform, books, stationery, sweaters, shoes and school supplies
  • Free transportation for children living far away

Frequently Asked Questions

Pathshala Education Trust runs a free, English-medium school (Nursery to Class V) for children from mining-affected and low-income families in and around Katras, Dhanbad. The idea is to give first-generation learners quality schooling, a safe environment, and the basic items they can’t afford.

Pathshala was started by Dev Kumar, a young Coal India Limited (BCCL) employee, who himself didn’t study in an English-medium school but wanted that opportunity for children in mining areas. He saw that thousands of families there lack access to good schooling, so he created a model that is free, practical, and child-friendly.

Children get separate toilets for girls and boys, a playground, drinking water, and most importantly free school materials — uniforms, books, stationery, sweaters, shoes and even free transport for those staying far. This ensures they don’t drop out because of cost.

Pathshala uses example-based and activity-based learning — like counting stairs to learn numbers or introducing great people through role-play — so that children who are new to English can still understand quickly. It’s designed for underprivileged, first-generation learners.

Your donation is used for teacher honorariums, free uniforms and books, classroom materials, and the transport facility for children from distant localities. In short, it removes the money barriers that usually stop these kids from going to school.
